James McDowell
James Allen McDowell, a San Luis Obispo County native, chose Cal Poly’s MST program as a pathway to earning his CPA license and deepening his expertise in taxation. With a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration (Accounting) from Cal Poly, James appreciated the program’s ability to build on his foundational knowledge.
“The MST program helped tremendously in studying for the REG section of the CPA exam and provided invaluable skills like tax research that aren’t covered in a bachelor’s degree,” James shared. These skills, combined with the program’s practical approach, prepared him for a successful start in his career.
During his time in the program, James participated in the Low Income Taxpayer Clinic (LITC), which allowed him to learn about tax controversies while serving the community. “The LITC provided incredibly unique opportunities and is a great program for anyone interested in accounting and law,” he said. Outside of academics, James also found fulfillment volunteering in children’s and youth ministries at Grace Bible Church, a rewarding activity he continues today.
Now working as a Tax Accountant at Glenn Burdette in SLO, James is committed to growing professionally. He values mentorship at his firm and aspires to reach a point where he can mentor others in the future.
James’s advice for current and future students? “Take the REG section of the CPA exam right after the program, and if possible, take time off to study for the other sections. Also, make time for fun activities with your cohort—it helps maintain balance and builds habits that will sustain you through busy seasons.”
Looking ahead, James plans to continue developing his skills and contributing to the field of taxation while helping others navigate their paths in the profession.
